Biennial Update Services Overview

USDOT Biennial Updates are extremely important. So important that they are required by law. The FMCSA states that companies must update their USDOT information every two years. Otherwise, they could be fined (up to $1,000 per day, not to exceed $10,000) or lose the authority to operate. One of the highest reasons people get their USDOT number revoked is they forget to do a Biennial filing. Let FCCR help with your USDOT Biennial update.

What Is A Biennial Update?

The USDOT Biennial Update is a registration form carriers have to sign every two years. The form you file is known as Form MCS150. This is still required if your company has not changed its information, has ceased interstate operations since the last update, or is no longer in business and the FMCSA wasn’t notified.

Do I Need to Update My DOT Number?

Yes, trucking companies need to update information associated with the USDOT numbers and it needs to happen every two years (hence “biennial” update). All a carrier has to do is file an MCS150 registration form. Trucking organizations, contractors and business owners must keep this in mind. A USDOT number must be attached to the sides of all trucks.

A USDOT number is required for all vehicles and CMVs that:

  • Are 10,000+ lbs in GVWR
  • Transports 8 or more passengers for compensation
  • Transports 15 passengers not for compensation
  • Transports Hazardous Materials per 49 CFR 385.403

A USDOT number is also required for all vehicles that operate interstate (those who cross state lines). Some states require a USDOT number regardless if the vehicle is involved in intrastate travel only (never crosses state lines). These states are: Alabama, Alaska, Arizona, California, Colorado, Connecticut, Florida, Georgia, Idaho, Indiana, Iowa, Kansas, Kentucky, Maine, Maryland, Massachusetts, Michigan, Minnesota, Missouri, Montana, New Jersey, New York, Nebraska, Nevada, North Carolina, Ohio, Oklahoma, Oregon, Pennsylvania, Puerto Rico, South Carolina, Texas, Utah, Washington, West Virginia, Wisconsin, Wyoming.

Just need a USDOT Number? FCCR also provides USDOT Number Registration services to help you acquire one for your CMV.

When Should The Biennial Update Be Filed?

The Biennial Update has a filing deadline unique to each USDOT number. To determine your filing period locate the last 2 digits of your USDOT number. The last digit indicates the month when the filing must take place. The second-to-last digit indicates the year when the filing must be completed.
